Pajarito’s most popular fall festival, Ullrfest, happens Saturday, September 29. Ullrfest features New Mexico Brewersfest with a dozen local craft beers, live music, lift-served hiking and biking, races, a disc golf tournament, costume contest, and more.
Ullrfest event organizer, Thad Hahn, gave us the inside scoop on this fall’s most anticipated event.
Remind us who Ullr is (pronounced “ULL-er”).
Ullr is the Norse God of snow. He is an excellent archer, hunter, skater and–most importantly–skier.
Why do we have a festival dedicated to him?
The ULLR Festival honors ULLR and is a community event in anticipation of bringing a good ski season to Pajarito.
Which breweries will be participating in New Mexico Brewersfest?
We’ll have nearly a dozen craft breweries pouring in the beer garden, including Bathtub Row, Taos Mesa, Blue Corn, Tractor, Second Street, Red River, 377, Boxing Bear, Santa Fe Brewing, Broken Trail, and Tumbleroot(beer & spirits).
A lot of festival-goers look forward to getting their Ullrfest commemorative pint glass. Does everyone get a glass?
To enter the beer garden, guests need to pay the $15 entry fee (proceeds benefit the Los Alamos Ski Club) and have a photo ID. Those two things get you your commemorative pint glass, plus a ticket for one full pint. Tastings are included in the fee, and additional fills cost $5.
What other activities be going on at the mountain?
Lift-served hiking and biking and the downhill bike race start at 9am. To enter the downhill race, use Strava to record your fastest time during the day. The disc golf tournament happens mid-morning, and the Cafe opens up at 11am. The beer garden opens at noon and live music gets under way around that same time.
Any advice for first-time festival attendees?
We accept cash, checks, or credit cards for entrance at the beer garden. The $15.00 entry fee gets you a glass and your first pour, but additional pours require cash only. Also, Atomic City Transit provides free shuttle service from LAHS every 30 minutes from 10am-6pm. The leaves are beginning to change color, so take advantage of the lift for hiking and biking, and don’t forget a jacket as it might get cold in the late afternoon and early evening. Pajarito Mountain Café has great New Mexico-inspired eats, and will be open both Saturday and Sunday. No outside alcohol is allowed. Dogs are required to be on leashes within the festival boundaries and are not allowed inside the lodge.
