Pipeline Project Ahead of Schedule

Jemez Mountain Fire Protection Project Ahead of Schedule: Snowmaking and Better Water, plus Internet and Electrical Infrastructure Coming Fall 2026

We’re thrilled to share some exciting news about the Jemez Mountain Fire Protection Project – the county is ahead of schedule!

This ambitious undertaking, nicknamed “the pipeline project” by our community, is bringing transformative improvements to our mountain. The JMFPP will create a comprehensive water pipeline system to transport water for snowmaking to Pajarito, enhance fire suppression capabilities, and provide reliable potable water throughout the mountain and up Camp May Road. The fiber optic and electrical conduits will enhance the controls to the booster stations and the tank.

Thanks to the dedicated work of the construction teams, the county is optimistic about completing Phases I, II, and IV by December 18 – weather permitting, of course. The project is slated to finish July 31, but the county is hoping to complete it sooner.

Ernesto Gallegos, Senior Project Manager leading the effort at Los Alamos County, shared his enthusiasm about the progress: “We have the opportunity to expedite the project to get the second half of the pipeline and conduit in the ground before winter, as long as nature cooperates.”

To make the most of this accelerated timeline, Camp May Road will be closed Monday through Friday until ski season begins. While this may cause some temporary inconvenience, it’s allowing the construction team to work more efficiently and safely. “The contractors are being aggressive with moving forward, which I appreciate!” Gallegos noted with satisfaction. “The more we accomplish now, the sooner we can finish the project.”

Here’s where we stand with each phase:

Phase I: Installation of the first half of underground water pipeline, fiber optic conduit, and electrical conduit – ✅ COMPLETE

Phase II: Installation of the second half of underground water pipeline, fiber optic conduit, and electrical conduit – scheduled for July 31 completion, now targeting an ambitious December 18 finish date (weather permitting)

Phase III: Installation of four booster pump stations – scheduled for future completion

Phase IV: Building and installation of Tank #2, a substantial 250,000-gallon water tank – currently 85% COMPLETE

This progress represents not just infrastructure improvements, but a significant investment in our community’s safety, recreation, and quality of life. We’ll continue to keep you updated as this important project moves forward.
